Campaign Nepal Delivers Essential Winter Aid to Flood-Affected Pregnant Women and New Mothers

In a vital effort to support families affected by both the September 2024 floods and the harsh winter, Campaign Nepal has distributed essential relief materials to 611 households in Paroha and Dewahi Gonahi municipalities of Rautahat district. The aid, distributed between November 25 and December 18, specifically targeted 457 pregnant women and 154 new mothers, who are among the most vulnerable during such crises.

The floods in September 2024 caused widespread devastation, displacing families, destroying homes, and leaving communities struggling to rebuild. As winter set in, the challenges intensified, with vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and new mothers facing increased health risks.

In response, Campaign Nepal provided warm winter clothing for mothers and their babies, flour supplements to address critical nutritional needs, and hygiene kits to promote cleanliness and prevent illnesses. The initiative was implemented under the Strengthening Maternal Neonatal Health Services (SMNHS) program, supported by One Heart Worldwide (OHW).

Local leaders emphasized the importance of this support for flood-affected families braving the winter season. Mahesh Singh, Ward Chairperson of Paroha Municipality (Ward 3) remarked:

The September floods devastated our communities, and the harsh winter has made survival even harder for pregnant women and new mothers. This aid has brought immense relief, ensuring their safety and well-being during these tough times. We are grateful to Campaign Nepal and OHW for this timely intervention.

Similarly, Health Coordinator Jagga Ram from Dewahi Gonahi Municipality highlighted the initiative’s broader impact on maternal health, noting:

Flood-affected families face a greater risk of health problems during winter. This support not only helps them recover but also encourages pregnant women and mothers to stay connected to essential healthcare services, improving overall maternal and neonatal health outcomes.

For beneficiaries like Nazni Khatun, a new mother from Dewahi Gonahi’s Ward 4, the relief came as an unexpected yet essential support. She shared:

The floods destroyed everything we had, and the winter made things even harder. The warm clothes and flour are a blessing for me and my baby. It feels good to know someone cares.

Flood-affected families are already vulnerable, and winter brings additional risks, especially for pregnant women and newborns. Our goal is to ensure they have the resources needed to survive and rebuild in these difficult times.

Babita Bindu, Manager at One Heart Worldwide, explained the rationale behind the initiative:

Campaign Nepal’s Executive Director Shatrudhan Singh expressed gratitude to all stakeholders involved in the initiative, saying:

This relief effort, targeting flood-affected families, demonstrates the power of collaboration in addressing immediate needs and long-term challenges. Together with One Heart Worldwide, we are committed to improving the lives of mothers and children.
